Downspout Placement: Why Does It Matter?

Properly installed and cleaned gutters play an important role in keeping your home dry and protected against the damaging effects of moisture. Downspouts direct water runoff from the gutters to drainage systems. They often terminate at about 10 feet away from the house, provided that the ground is perfectly level. If the area near the drainage has sloped terrain or unusual soil conditions, the downspouts are equipped with extensions or additional pipes that are buried on the ground.

Proper design and correct installation are vital in making sure the downspouts work as they should. Otherwise, rainwater or melted snow may collect near your foundations and around basement walls. As moisture seeps through the ground, the concrete foundations may become more exposed to structural damage, resulting in costly repairs. General Guidelines for Downspout Placement

Having more than one downspout within a single run of gutter is essential to keep it from overflowing, especially in the event of a downpour.

Another important consideration for downspout placement involves the termination point. It shouldn’t end at a spot where water flowing out may pool, including near your home’s foundations. If the drain is too far away from your property, the downspout can be fitted with an extension or a below-grade pipe.
