A Beginner’s Guide to the House Wrap

Although most people think of the roof and siding as the home’s main form of protection, there are other components that play a part in keeping your home safe and comfortable. Today, our exterior specialists will talk about the basics of one particular component: the house wrap.

What Is the House Wrap?

The house wrap is located behind the siding. It is an airproof, waterproof barrier. It is very similar to a roofing system’s underlayment, but it also acts as a heat barrier that helps keep the home insulated together with the actual insulation found in an interior wall.

Do All Parts of Your Home Need House Wrap?

A house wrap is important for areas where insulation is a major concern. However, roofing and exterior experts say that some areas can easily do without house wrap such as a tool or garden shed. Detached storage sheds that contain heat or moisture-sensitive things have to be protected by house wrap to prevent damage to whatever’s inside.

Does Your Home Need New House Wrap?

If you have a newly-built home, there’s a good chance that it will be protected by a house wrap. However, older homes may not have house wrap since it is a fairly new addition to home construction. Fortunately, housewrap can be retrofitted even in most types of traditional homes.

Can I Install House Wrap On My Own?

Although house wrap installation rarely violates any local building codes, properly putting it up will probably be difficult for most people. Because of this, we strongly recommend getting help from local siding and roof repair contractors to avoid uneven installation, folds or tears while it is being installed.
