Blistering Asphalt Shingles: Causes and Prevention

Roof leaks, blow-offs and moss growth are some of the most common roofing problems that roofing contractors handle. Blisters or bubblelike marks on asphalt shingles are also a prevalent issue. Unfortunately, not many homeowners know that this is a cause for concern.

In this article, Homecraft® Inc. discusses the causes of asphalt shingle blistering and how to prevent it.

Causes of Asphalt Shingle Blistering

  • Trapped moisture. If moisture is trapped in the shingle during the manufacturing process, it is likely that blisters will form after installation. As the sun heats the shingle, the trapped moisture rises, eventually causing blisters.
  • Insufficient ventilation. Blisters form when there is too much heat. So, if the ventilation in your attic is little to nonexistent, it can heat the roof shingles from underneath.
  • Subpar workmanship. On rare occasions, asphalt shingle blistering is the result of poor installation. For example, if roofing materials are not installed at the proper temperature, wrinkles and leaks will occur, potentially resulting in the formation of blisters.

How to Prevent Asphalt Shingle Blistering

The best way to prevent blisters from forming on your asphalt shingles is by choosing top-quality materials from a trusted brand. Regular maintenance should also be high on your priority list. Blisters should dissolve once the moisture evaporates. If not monitored properly, these blisters could pop from impact or stepping on them during inspections.

It is also important to address attic ventilation. If your attic is not well ventilated, it can overheat and start to bake the components including asphalt shingles in your roofing system. Ice dams and mold growth from overheated interiors are also possible.
