Asphalt-Saturated

Before newer and better options came into play, asphalt-saturated used to be the go-to option for roof underlayment. It provides sufficient watertight performance, and if you’re on a budget, its availability and cost efficiency can be appealing. Just keep in mind that asphalt-saturated has already been eclipsed by its newer counterparts. When it comes to a new roof installation, it’s always a good idea to focus on quality instead of price. 

Rubberized Asphalt

This is a premium underlayment option with a premium cost to match. But if you’re okay with spending more, rubberized asphalt can be an excellent option for your new roof. Made of asphalt and rubber polymers, this underlayment self-seals around the more leak-prone areas of your roof, such as the chimneys, vent pipes, dormers, valleys and skylights, helping keep them secure and watertight. But before deciding on rubberized asphalt, you should learn more about the last, and certainly not the least, option.

Non-Bitumen Synthetic

If there’s one roof underlayment that most roofing professionals recommend, it would be non-bitumen synthetic. Consisting of polypropylene or polyethylene, this option is several steps above asphalt-saturated in terms of waterproofing ability, but it’s not as expensive as rubberized asphalt. It’s impervious to tearing and moisture, plus it’s lightweight, making it easier and faster to install. It also sits comfortably in the middle of asphalt-saturated and rubberized asphalt, making it the ideal option for homeowners looking for something reasonably priced that doesn’t sacrifice quality.
