Roof Mold and Algae: The Differences

Mold and algae are a recurring threat to any home. Whether it’s the siding, the ceiling, or the basement, there are some instances where you can spot them even if you’re not looking. Apart from the aforementioned areas, mold and algae can also grow on the roof and one of these can pose a threat to your roofing system.

In this post, Homecraft® Inc. the differences between roof mold and algae.

Algae

The foremost characteristic that differentiates algae from mold is that the former just a plant that grows in the presence of sunshine and the moisture on your roof. It’s more common than mold, especially in humid climates, but it’s not as threatening as mold and doesn’t pose any health concern to your household.

That said, it reproduces by releasing spores into the air, which can spread throughout the neighborhood and can even affect your home’s resale value if you don’t clean your roof immediately. Luckily, roofing pros and siding contractor Homecraft® Inc. offers algae-resistant asphalt shingles for your roofing system to prevent it from proliferating.

Mold

Between the two, mold is the one you have to worry about the most. It’s prevalent and destructive and can be a health hazard if you aren’t careful. It’s also difficult to remove from your roof without the help of the right professionals.

Mold forms in the damp and poorly ventilated areas of your home, such as the crawl space, attic, and basement, before spreading to your roof. Like algae, it can affect your home’s resale value, just worse, since mold doesn’t usually grow on the roof and its presence there means your entire property has been invaded. This is why it’s important to inspect your attic, crawl space, and basement every once in a while to ensure mold doesn’t form anywhere.
