The Role Your Underlayment Plays in Your Roofing System

Your roof is a complicated system with several parts and layers. One of the most important layers is the underlayment. The underlayment protects the roof deck from damage and is one of your home’s best defenses against roof leaks. Homecraft®, one of the top roofers in our area, talks about the purpose of the underlayment:

Why Is the Underlayment Important?

The primary purpose of the underlayment is to act as a layer between your shingles and the roof sheathing. It serves as a moisture barrier, preventing water that gets through your shingles from damaging the vulnerable roof sheathing. The underlayment is also important for older homes. Old homes used pine and fir boards for their roof sheathing and these wood types can react chemically with some kinds of roof covering.

While many roof installations can be finished quickly, some situations may cause the project to take a few days to complete. The underlayment can act as temporary protection during the roof installation. It does a good job at this because all manufacturers design their underlayment to prevent water from reaching your roof sheathing. The underlayment is important, which is why as roofing experts, we use only the best possible products for our customers.
