Accurate measurements form the foundation of any successful siding project. As a homeowner, understanding how much siding you need for your home exterior project is key to budgeting and planning effectively. Homecraft® Inc. shares tips to help you with your siding replacement project.
Measure Your Home
The first step in determining the amount of siding needed is to measure your home. This not only includes all exterior walls but also windows, doors, and any unique architectural features. To get the area of each wall, you’ll need to measure the height and width, then multiply these numbers together. For doors and windows, calculate their area and subtract it from the wall area they occupy.
Calculate Total Area
Once you have the area for each wall, you can add these together to get the total siding area. However, your house may have more complex features, such as gables or eaves, which also need siding. These areas can be trickier to measure. For a gable, you’ll typically need to measure the width at the base and the height at the peak, then multiply these and divide by two. Remember to add these additional areas to your total.
Consider Waste and Trim
When calculating the amount of siding needed, it’s essential to account for waste and trim. Even with careful cutting and installation, there’s often some material left over. Generally, it’s a good idea to add 10% to your total area to account for this. You’ll also need to measure and account for any trim areas, which are typically around windows, doors, and corners of the house.
