Hiring the right siding contractor warrants careful consideration, as they can ensure the success of your siding replacement project. So before you decide on which siding contractor to hire, make sure you ask the following questions:
Do You Have Valid Licenses?
A siding contractor should have the proper licenses as required by the state, county or city they operate in. A contractor’s license is an indicator that the contractor is a legitimate one, and it is your assurance that they will comply with all applicable building codes. Reputable contractors should have no problem providing their license information, which you should be able to verify with a single phone call. At Homecraft® Inc., we will be happy to provide such information if you need it.
Are You Insured?
A siding contractor should have insurance that covers both accidental property damage and worksite injuries. Otherwise, you may end up paying for both out of your own pocket. The siding contractor insurance coverage should have liability insurance and workers’ compensation, and there should be a letter or certification included with the paperwork. You can hit two (or several) birds with one stone by hiring contractors with manufacturer certification since a contractor license and insurance are two of the several requirements needed for such certification. In our case, we hold certifications from leading siding manufacturers ProVia® and Mastic.
Will You Provide Local References?
One sure way of checking a siding contractor’s quality of work is to look at their past installations. As with the license information, reputable contractors should have no problem providing a few references that you can call. Ask for local references, if possible. Chances are, the contractor will have worked for someone you know. This gives you the opportunity to personally inspect their work, and you can be as candid as you want with your questions.
Do You Provide Written Quotes and/or Warranties?
You should have everything in writing, and that includes quotes and warranties. Verbal agreements won’t be worth anything, especially if you need to follow up or file a claim. The written quotation should include a detailed description of the siding project – materials, project cost and installation and completion dates, among others.
