Fall is the best season to tackle some home maintenance tasks — like cleaning your windows. Not only does it help you prepare for winter, it helps prepare your home for the holidays. It also checks off one item from your spring cleaning tasks. In today’s post, local replacement windows company Homecraft Inc. shares some tips on cleaning your windows this fall.
1. Clean your windows on a cloudy day — Tap water has minerals that might leave hard-to-remove spots on your windows if they dry too quickly. Try to time your window cleaning when the skies are overcast. It will give you more time to use your squeegee and wipe the windows dry and prevent water spotting. If your windows are up for replacement, look for window glass with metal oxide coatings that help remove water spotting.
2. Use a brush first when cleaning window frames — Dust and dirt can get stuck even on low-maintenance vinyl windows if you don’t clean them properly. Use a brush to remove dust and dirt from the indoor side of your window frames. Taking a wet cloth to it would only form what is essentially mud and push it into hard-to-reach crevices, which would end up visible, especially on light-colored frames with wood grain.
3. Do not use a pressure washer — Pressure washers are great for many types of outdoor cleaning, but they shouldn’t be used on your windows — and most other parts of your home, for that matter. It can strip the coatings on the window frames, and may even damage the glass. Low-maintenance windows need only water from a garden hose. If you need to remove stubborn dirt, use a glass cleaning product or diluted dish detergent and a soft sponge.
4. Do not use paper for wiping glass — Paper towels and newspapers can scratch the glass surface and leave stains. Instead, use microfiber cloths for wiping the glass dry. They’re easy to find online and sold in most hardware stores, can be bought in bulk, and can be used to clean many things in your house other than window glass.
