3 Tips for Choosing the Right Shutters for Your Windows

Shutters are both aesthetic and functional. They complement the design of your windows and they provide an additional layer of protection for your windows. It might seem like an easy, simply choice, but you have to be careful to make sure that the shutters you get are the right ones. In this article, Homecraft® gives you three tips for choosing correctly:

Tip #1: Make sure there is enough space.

Do not just fit your shutters on your vinyl windows in Wilmington, DE while they’re shut. Instead, make sure they have clearance on both sides of the windows that are the width of half the window’s, plus 2 or 3 inches. You should also make sure that they will not hit any roof overhangs when they’re opened fully.

Tip #2: Decide on safety.

There are three types of shutters you can get. The exterior version is the most common: swinging outward to open. The interior version opens up by swinging inward. The third type is mostly decorative, being fixed beside your window. When choosing, safety is a good criterion. Exterior shutters are not advisable in high wind areas where they can be jostled about. Meanwhile, interior models should not be used in areas where they can knock over lamps or décor.

Tip #3: Go for longevity.

Like the frames of your replacement windows in Wilmington, DE, shutters come in a range of material options. Wood is a classic choice and looks beautiful. The only problem is that it tends to be vulnerable to weathering effects that it’s constantly exposed to. Vinyl is a good option because modern iterations emulate the look of wood. On the upside, vinyl does away with the vulnerabilities of the material that it copies in appearance—lasting longer.

Getting shutters for your windows is a great way to supplement your home’s look and curb appeal. It also offers a great deal of protection for your vulnerable glass windows. Getting ones that offer the most benefits is all a matter of careful choice. If these tips are not enough, call Homecraft at (302) 798-0302. We’ll be happy to discuss the best solutions to your home’s needs.
