How to Secure Your Windows

New, top-quality replacement windows can benefit your home in several ways, from better energy efficiency to added curb appeal to higher levels of comfort. But you should also make sure that your windows are secure enough to prevent a break-in.

Here are some ways to improve the security of your windows:

Lock Your Windows

It might sound like a no-brainer, but unlocked windows and doors are two of the most common ways intruders break into homes. The numbers suggest that intruders will try windows and doors until they find an unlocked one before they move on to the next target or look for other ways to break in. It’s simple:

  • Lock your windows if they’re closed anyway

  • Don’t forget to close and lock your windows after airing out a room

  • Check if all your windows and doors are locked before going to bed or leaving the house.

Don’t Skimp on the Locks

Your windows already come with locks, but if the locks are cheap, it only takes a pry bar for an intruder to get inside. Unless you have top-quality vinyl windows that already came with special hardware, it’s a good idea to add quality locks for extra protection against break-ins. Many window manufacturers like Andersen allow you to choose or add the locks you want. Take advantage of that offer. Even if you have to spend a bit more on tougher and more reliable locks, it’s an investment in your security so it’s worth it.

You can add pin locks, hinged wedge locks, security bars or even keyed locks to make sure your windows are not easy to slide or pry open. Make sure your locks are manufactured with good-quality metal.

Add Barriers

Increase your window security by adding other barriers. One option is to install security film, which makes the glass tougher to break. It instantly makes your windows impact-resistant. Intruders or tree branches flung against your windows by strong winds won’t shatter the glass.

Bothered by bugs entering your window? Choose steel window security screens. They will help keep the bugs out and make it tougher for “bigger bugs” to enter your home. Steel screens are mounted permanently, but they have a hinged side and an interior latch so you can still open them if there’s an emergency.

Add Other Security Devices

There are other devices you can add to your list of window security features.

  • Install window alarms. These are simple, wireless alarms that don’t cost much. Opening a window triggers the alarm. If an intruder is successful in beating the lock and other defenses, the noise is likely to scare them away or call attention to you and your neighbors.

  • Install new lights. Intruders like to work in the dark to avoid detection. If you have lights around your home, they might think twice about trying to break in. You can also install motion detector lights that turn on when they detect movement.

  • Install CCTV cameras. A CCTV camera connected to a server that saves its video feed can help the authorities catch a burglar. However, the presence of a camera alone is often enough to scare intruders away, so install your cameras where they are easy to see, not easy to reach.
