The Difference Between the ENERGY STAR® and the NFRC Labels

When it comes to ensuring your home is as energy-efficient as possible, choosing the right windows, doors, and skylights is essential. These components not only influence how your home looks but also how it performs energy-wise. Two crucial symbols you may encounter in your search for energy efficiency are ENERGY STAR® and the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) labels. Although they may appear similar, they serve distinct purposes that are beneficial for homeowners like you. Keep reading to learn about their differences.

What Is the ENERGY STAR® Certification?

ENERGY STAR is a widely recognized symbol for energy efficiency backed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Products that earn the ENERGY STAR label meet stringent energy efficiency guidelines set by the EPA. ENERGY STAR-certified windows, doors, and skylights are independently certified to save energy, offering significant savings over time. They can lower electric bills by an average of up to 13% and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the process.

What About the NFRC Label?

The NFRC, on the other hand, is an independent non-profit organization that provides a standardized system for evaluating window, door, and skylight energy performance. The NFRC label offers detailed information that includes ratings for the following:

  • U-factor – how well the product insulates
  • Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) – how much heat from the sun is blocked
  • Visible transmittance – how much light is let through

Sometimes air leakage and condensation resistance are also included in the label. These ratings can guide you in selecting products that will contribute to the overall energy efficiency and comfort of your home throughout the seasons.

ENERGY STAR® and NFRC Labels Are Complementary, Not Interchangeable

While both the ENERGY STAR and NFRC labels refer to energy efficiency, it’s important to remember that they complement each other and are not interchangeable. ENERGY STAR identifies top-performing, energy-efficient products, while NFRC offers a detailed comparative analysis of the energy performance of different products. Understanding the difference between these labels can result in more informed decisions, ensuring both energy savings and increased home comfort.
