The History of Windows in America

Windows are an important part of any American home. After all, not only do they improve your home’s energy efficiency and ventilation but the overall look of your home as well. As such, it’s important that you have your windows replaced when it’s time. However, when it comes to installing vinyl windows on your home, not many homeowners think about the history of the window.

Here’s a brief discussion on the history of American windows:

19th Century

During the 19th century, wood windows were very prevalent. However, due to a devastating number of fires, more and more U.S. cities began to adopt strict fire codes, decreasing wood window installation popularity in the process. Thankfully, with the height of the Industrial Revolution, the production of rolled steel increased, permitting the mass production of steel windows, allowing for fire-resistant frames and sashes.

20th Century

As the 20th century went into full swing, steel became the most popular window material for both residential and commercial use. This is because the strength of steel frames allowed the use of larger expanses of glass, enabling thin profiles and repeated window patterns in the process. However, after World War II, aluminum windows also gained popularity because they were far more affordable than steel and didn’t corrode. Due to this, wood windows completely fell out of fashion in favor of steel and aluminum windows.

21st Century

Toward the turn of the 21st century, on the other hand, even the popularity of steel and aluminum windows were reduced with the advent of vinyl windows. This is because vinyl is said to be less costly compared to the aforementioned materials and requires minimal maintenance at the same time. Apart from that, vinyl is said to be far more energy-efficient than aluminum, steel and wood.
